We Compared 4 Popular Raw Dog Foods. Only One Checked Every Box.

If you’ve spent any time researching raw dog food subscriptions, you already know the landscape is overwhelming. Every brand promises “biologically appropriate” meals. Every brand says their food is the best. But when you dig into the details that actually matter to your pup’s safety and nutrition, the differences between these companies are significant.

I evaluated four of the most talked-about raw dog food brands across five criteria: Safety protocols, ingredient transparency, nutritional profile, protein variety, and convenience. Here’s what I found.

The Short Version

Four Founders, One Shared Mission

Every single one of these brands started the same way: with one sick or struggling dog and an owner who refused to settle. If you’re reading this, that’s probably your story, too.

We Feed Raw’s Story

Alissa Zalneraitis Original founder of We Feed Raw

We Feed Raw began in 2009 in Austin when lifelong animal rescuer Alissa Zalneraitis started preparing raw meals for dogs with her fiancé, Rich, a sushi chef. What began as a small local operation quickly grew through word of mouth. Alissa’s dachshund Teddy thrived on the diet and lived to 18. After Alissa passed away in 2014, her sister Amy stepped in to carry the company forward, building a team dedicated to rigorous formulation, expert nutrition guidance, and uncompromising food safety.

Maev’s Story

Katie Founder & CEO of Maev

Maev’s founder Katie Spies was an MIT-trained engineer with a Harvard MBA when her rescued Italian Greyhound George started having seizures. Vets couldn’t pinpoint the cause, but one suggested raw food. George improved dramatically within 30 days. Katie quit tech, spent nine months as a dog walker in San Francisco to understand pet parents firsthand, and built the brand from her kitchen alongside Harvard classmate Christine Busaba.

Viva Raw’s Story

Zach & Jenn Founders of Viva

Viva Raw came together during the pandemic, when Jennifer Wu and Zach Ao left their project management jobs to build what they couldn’t find for their Rhodesian Ridgeback, Karoo. They bootstrapped from a commercial kitchen in North Carolina, sourcing from local farms and processing 10 to 20 orders a week themselves.

Darwin’s Story

pasted image zXyrwGtJ

Max, Founder of Darwin's Sheep Dog

Darwin’s roots can be traced back to Gary Tashjian’s Old English Sheepdog, Max, who had crippling arthritis at 10. Traditional meds failed. A holistic vet suggested raw food, and within 30 days, Max was acting like a puppy again. He lived to 15. Tashjian began personally delivering meals across the Northwest, founding the company in 2004 as one of the first raw brands in the U.S.

These stories remind me why raw feeding matters so much: It starts with love for one dog and grows into something bigger.

Safety: The Non-Negotiable

This is where these brands drastically diverge.

We Feed Raw uses High Pressure Processing (HPP), an FDA-approved method that eliminates pathogens using cold water at extreme pressure, without heat or chemicals. Their HPP process delivers a 5-log pathogen reduction, making the food as safe as gently cooked options while preserving the nutritional integrity of raw. The result is zero recalls since the company’s founding. That’s over 15 years and more than 20 million meals served without a single safety incident.

Maev uses a proprietary, non-HPP safety process and batch-tests every production run for E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and microbial contaminants. Credit where it’s due, Maev also has zero recalls to date. For a raw brand, that’s meaningful.

Viva Raw had three recalls in roughly 18 months (January 2024, July 2024, and August 2025) for Salmonella and/or Listeria contamination. Following those incidents, the company invested heavily in food safety improvements and adopted HPP beginning the week of January 26, 2026. That’s a responsible move, and it signals growth. But We Feed Raw has been using HPP proactively since the beginning, not as a corrective measure.

Darwin’s has the most concerning safety history of the four. The FDA has documented a pattern of contamination in Darwin’s products going back to 2016, including multiple advisories for Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. Most recently, a 2025 FDA advisory linked E. coli in Darwin’s beef dog food to a child’s hospitalization with hemolytic uremic syndrome. Darwin’s doesn’t use HPP or any comparable pathogen-elimination technology, and the company has repeatedly pushed back against the FDA’s recall recommendations.

Nutrition: What’s in the Bowl

We Feed Raw’s frozen recipes follow an approximately 80/10/10 ratio of muscle meat, organ meat, and ground bone, plus flaxseed, zinc, vitamin E, manganese, and vitamin D3 in simple, targeted amounts. No fruits, no vegetables, no fillers. The frozen line delivers ~0% carbohydrates*, keeping meals as close to a dog’s ancestral diet as possible. Frozen recipes are formulated by a PhD animal nutritionist, complete and balanced per AAFCO standards for all life stages.

Maev takes a different approach by blending USDA-certified proteins with fruits, vegetables, and targeted supplements (probiotics, glucosamine, and/or fish oils, depending on the formula). It’s a solid product, but the inclusion of ingredients like potatoes, green beans, peanut butter, and peas means carbohydrate content runs around 22%. If your dog does well with a more varied ingredient profile, Maev delivers.

Viva Raw includes organic fruits, vegetables, and probiotics in its formulas. The brand’s commitment to ethically sourced, antibiotic-free meat from small farms is genuinely admirable and worth noting for pup parents who care about where their dog’s food comes from.

Darwin’s recipes use a 75/25 split of meat to vegetables. They’re formulated to meet AAFCO standards and offer both a premium Natural Selections line (free-range meats, organic vegetables) and a budget-friendly BioLogics line with conventional ingredients at roughly 15% lower cost. For families feeding multiple large dogs, that BioLogics tier is a real advantage.

Protein Variety and Flexibility

Pasted Image

We Feed Raw offers five frozen proteins (Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, and Duck), plus two freeze-dried options (Beef and Chicken for adult dogs). That range accommodates picky eaters and dogs with sensitivities. If your dog has a specific protein sensitivity, it’s worth knowing that the beef, chicken, and turkey recipes are true single-protein options. The lamb recipe also contains beef, and the duck recipe includes turkey.

Maev currently offers just two base proteins, chicken and beef, each available in multiple supplement-targeted blends. If your pup needs a novel protein or you like to rotate frequently, the limited selection may feel restrictive.

Viva Raw offers a strong lineup of proteins including beef, chicken, turkey, duck, lamb, emu, and rabbit, plus a puppy-specific formula. That variety is impressive, especially for dogs with allergies who need novel protein options.

Darwin’s offers chicken, turkey, beef, duck, and lamb across its Natural Selections line, with chicken, turkey, and beef available in BioLogics. They also offer a poultry blend and prescription Intelligent Design formulas for dogs with specific health conditions.

Convenience and Experience

All four brands ship frozen to your door on a subscription model. We Feed Raw pre-portions meals based on your dog’s profile, ships free with eco-friendly packaging, and offers a 30-day Happiness Guarantee. Pause, change, or cancel anytime.

Maev has a unique convenience edge: Its food is designed to be served straight from the freezer. No thawing required. For busy pup parents, that’s a real time-saver.

Viva Raw ships free on orders over a certain threshold and offers both ground and chunked texture options. Darwin’s provides free shipping on orders over 20 lbs and offers personalized menu consultations by phone or email.
