I’ve spent years watching Boone flinch at fireworks and slammed doors and Belle case a hotel room the way a detective would clear a scene. As most dog people do, I filled in the blanks with stories. He must’ve had a rough puppyhood. She has trust issues.

Ancestry is the frame around the picture, though. It sets rough expectations for energy, grooming, and adult size, and it hints at a handful of instincts you can predict from lineage alone. What none of it can tell you is why one pup handles a busy sidewalk fine but falls apart in a strange Airbnb or why an old boy still panics the second a kennel door clicks shut. For that, you need a different layer of the genome.
Where Genetics Gets Personal

The Wiring Behind the “Bad Behavior”
Here’s where the whole experience turned out to be useful for me. Boone’s report shows he’s 2.1 times more likely to be anxious when confined, and Belle’s says she’s 1.6 times more likely to be anxious in unfamiliar places.
Start with the wiring. A Beagle-Border Collie mix bred to chase a scent and cover ground, then asked to sit quietly in a wire kennel is fighting his own genome. A bully-breed girl whose ancestors were selected for intense environmental awareness tends to clock every new smell in a strange hotel.
Move to the guilt, which is the part I want to talk you (and myself) out of. This isn’t your fault, and it’s not their quirkiness.
Boone doesn’t fall apart when the door shuts because I did something wrong when he was a puppy. Belle didn’t pace her first Airbnb to be dramatic. Some of what they do traces back to tendencies they were born with, and once you can see that, it’s a lot easier to help them through it.
